Saskatchewan’s Highway Hotline was covered in a spiderweb of blue “travel not recommended” alerts on Sunday afternoon, as icy conditions blanketed large swathes of the province.

Hazardous conditions were noted on almost every highway from Lloydminster in the northwest to Moosomin in the southeast, and a semi-truck is reported to have rolled over shortly after noon on Highway 16 between North Battleford and Delmas.

Within Saskatoon, the streets were no better.

“Saskatoon residents are waking up to slick city streets (on Sunday) morning following freezing rain overnight,” the City said in a news release. “Snow is expected to begin Sunday morning and continue throughout the day.”

Roadway crews worked through the night, laying down salt and sand on Circle Drive and other freeways.

“There are 8 graders, 18 sanders and 6 plows out grading snow and ice on the highest priority streets such as Circle Drive, College Drive, 22nd Street, Idylwyld Drive and 8th Street,” the City noted. “There are also sidewalk plows sanding bridge walkways and pathways to ensure these are passable for pedestrians.”

The plan, if weather and road conditions permit, is for snow removal on priority streets to take place “over the next few days.”
