Man suffers burns, smoke inhalation in Vanier high-rise fire

A resident suffered burns and smoke inhalation in a fire at a high-rise on McArthur Avenue in the Vanier sector early Friday.
At about 1:22 a.m., a monitoring agency reported active fire alarms in the high-rise building. Residents in the building also reported visible flames at the site.
Firefighters arriving at the scene confirmed flames on a balcony on the sixth floor. Teams arriving at the floor were met with heavy smoke in the hallway.

One crew activated a hose in the fire unit while a second crew began searching the apartment for any occupants.
The flames were extinguished before they could spread past the balcony into the apartment and the fire was declared under control at 1:43 a.m.
A firefighter located the resident from the apartment who had gone to the ground floor. Firefighters began treating the resident for smoke inhalation and burns to their hands.
Ottawa paramedics confirmed they treated a man for smoke inhalation and burns and he was taken to hospital in stable condition.
A fire investigator has been dispatched to the scene.
