The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s basketball, women’s volleyball and men’s volleyball teams all took a step closer to a national championship over the weekend.
The Huskie women’s hoop team qualified for the upcoming U Sports national championship tournament in Vancouver, B.C., with a 63-45 win over the University of Fraser Valley Cascades during Canada West semi-final action Saturday night in the Ron & Jane Graham Gym at the Physical Activity Complex.

Logan Rieder paced Saskatchewan with 19 points. Maya Flindall added 10 points and six rebounds. Ella Murphy Wiebe and Courtney Primeau each chipped in with eight points.
Gage Grassick had seven points, six assists and six rebounds.
Saskatchewan will now host the UBC Thunderbirds in the Canada West final next Saturday (5 p.m.) at the PAC. Both teams will advance to nationals.
Earlier Saturday at the PAC, the Huskie men’s volleyball squad advanced to the Canada West Final Four next weekend thanks to a convincing 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-22) win over the Trinity Western University Spartans.
Jacob Baird, who has spent time with Australia’s national team program, led Saskatchewan with 13 kills, four digs and a block. Isiah Mamer added 12 kills, five digs and a service ace.
The Huskies will now play the University of Winnipeg Wesmen in Canada West semifinal action next weekend and a win would automatically put them into the national championship tournament.
Meanwhile, the U of S women’s volleyball squad won in three straight sets Sunday (25-20, 29-27, 26-24) over the host University of Fraser Valley Cascades in Abbotsford, B.C., to book its ticket to the Canada West Final Four semifinal next weekend.

Keely Anderson led the way with 10 kills. Abby Klein and Jessica Bergstrom added nine kills apiece, while Taryn Hannah had eight.
Huskies lost in straight sets 3-0 (21-25, 24-26, 22-25) to the host Cascades on Saturday at Abbotsford, B.C., after a 3-1 (11-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-23) win one night earlier.
Anderson paced Saskatchewan with eight kills Saturday. The day before, the Huskies were able to rebound from a slow start to win the opening night with Anderson recording 12 kills.
Meantime, back in Saskatoon, the Saskatchewan Huskies and UBC Thunderbirds will battle in Game 3 of their Canada West men’s hockey semifinal Sunday night to decide who advances to the Canada West final and University Cup national tournament.
Game-time is 6 p.m. at Merlis Belsher Place.
